Sears KSX Super / Ricoh KR-10 Super + 50mm f/1.7 Boxed Film Tested. K mount K-Mount Sleeper This is one of those vintage SLRs that I think is considerably better than its reputation—or its price—would suggest. The Sears KSX Super is the Sears-branded version of the Ricoh KR-10 Super, built in Japan and using the Pentax K mount. I have owned and shot a number of these cameras for years. I am only selling this one because I have accumulated far too much equipment and it is time to thin things out. This is not a camera that I pulled out of a closet, put a battery in and dry-fired a few times for an eBay listing. I have actually photographed extensively with these bodies and this one in particular. I know how they behave in the field, and that is one reason I have kept them for so long. Why I like the KSX Super For a relatively inexpensive camera, the KSX Super has an unusually useful combination of features. It is lightweight and easy to carry, yet it has a very capable electronically controlled shutter with fixed exposure times extending all the way down to 16 full seconds. That makes it surprisingly useful for available-light and nighttime photography without immediately reaching for Bulb. The focusing screen is another feature I particularly like. It has a bright diagonal split-image rangefinder surrounded by a microprism collar. The diagonal split is less common than the usual horizontal split and, in actual use, I find it extremely effective because it gives you useful edges to focus on regardless of whether the subject contains predominantly horizontal or vertical lines. And unlike quite a few aperture-priority automatic SLRs from this period, the KSX Super is not reduced to guesswork when you switch to manual exposure. The meter remains useful in manual mode, so you can select your own shutter speed and aperture while still using the camera's meter as an exposure reference. That makes it a much more versatile manual camera than many inexpensive aperture-priority bodies of the era. It gives you both approaches in one lightweight body: use aperture-priority when you want speed, or switch to manual and retain proper metering when you want complete control. This particular camera I have used this camera extensively and it has been a dependable shooter. The meter is exceptionally good on this example and agrees essentially dead-on with my reference meter. The camera advances, fires and rewinds properly, and the controls work as they should in normal use. Sears/Ricoh 50mm f/1.7 The included Sears/Ricoh 50mm f/1.7 K-mount lens is not filler. I have used these Sears/Ricoh 50/1.7 lenses quite a bit and think they are excellent. They are compact, fast and very sharp, with genuinely attractive rendering and good out-of-focus character. This is one of those inexpensive standard lenses that is much better photographically than the name on the front might lead someone to expect. This particular example is exceptionally clean and appears to have had extremely little use. The Sears/Ricoh connection Part of the charm here is precisely that it says Sears on the front. Sears sold some very respectable Japanese photographic equipment under its own name, and this camera is fundamentally a Ricoh-designed K-mount SLR wearing Sears branding. Today that gives it a little period character of its own: part Japanese camera history and part American department-store history.
